Mould Lab Australia – SESALAB

SESALAB is the specialist mould laboratory operated by Safety & Environmental Services Australia (SESA), providing mould analysis to support environmental investigations and building assessments throughout Australia.

Mould Testing lab

Mould Lab

SESALAB provides specialist mould laboratory analysis for occupational hygienists, environmental consultants, building professionals, mould inspectors and remediation specialists investigating suspected fungal contamination. The laboratory specialises in direct microscopic examination of fungal structures collected from suitable air and surface samples, supporting the assessment of mould findings in residential, commercial, industrial and institutional environments.

SESALAB was the first laboratory in Australia to achieve NATA accreditation for specified mould analysis methods by direct microscopy. This specialist capability supports the examination of airborne and surface fungal structures using recognised ASTM methods, with analytical findings considered in the context of the sample type, collection method and objectives of the investigation.

Our team can advise on available analytical services, sample suitability, accreditation requirements and submission procedures to help clients identify an appropriate testing approach for their project.

About SESALAB

SESALAB operates as part of SESA, an Australian provider of occupational hygiene, environmental consulting and workplace safety services. The laboratory supports SESA’s wider work in investigating environmental conditions, suspected contamination and building-related concerns, providing analytical information that can contribute to professional assessments and recommendations.

The laboratory team has specialist expertise across occupational hygiene, mycology and indoor environmental assessment. Its work includes the microscopic examination of fungal structures collected using suitable air-sampling cassettes and surface tape samplers. Depending on the analytical method and material submitted, examination can provide information about the fungal structures observed in the sample.

SESALAB works with professionals who require laboratory findings to inform environmental investigations, building assessments and remediation decisions. Clients can contact the laboratory to discuss technical requirements and the appropriate application of analytical results.

SESALAB Moul Lab Australia

Australia's First NATA-Accredited Mould Lab

SESALAB was the first laboratory in Australia to achieve NATA accreditation for mould analysis by direct microscopy under specified ASTM methods for airborne and surface fungal structures. Accreditation recognises technical competence for the activities included within the laboratory’s approved scope and provides independent recognition of its capability to perform those activities.

The relevant methods include:

  • ASTM D7391-17e1: Standard Test Method for Categorization and Quantification of Airborne Fungal Structures in an Inertial Impaction Sample by Optical Microscopy.
  • ASTM D7658-17: Standard Test Method for Direct Microscopy of Fungal Structures from Tape.

These methods address the microscopic examination of fungal structures collected using suitable air-sampling cassettes and tape surface samplers, respectively. The appropriate method depends on the sample collected and the objectives of the investigation.

NATA accreditation operates within a defined scope and does not automatically cover every sample type, analytical method or service offered by a laboratory. Clients requiring accredited results should confirm that their requested analysis falls within SESALAB’s current scope before submitting samples.

Specialist Laboratory Capabilities

SESALAB provides analytical services to support investigations into suspected fungal contamination and indoor environmental conditions. Available testing depends on the sample matrix, collection method, requested analysis and purpose of the investigation.

  • Air sample analysis: Direct microscopic examination of fungal structures collected using suitable spore-trap cassettes or other accepted air-sampling media, subject to the requirements of the applicable method.
  • Surface sample analysis: Examination of fungal structures collected using appropriate tape samplers. Other surface or material samples may be considered after confirming their suitability for the requested analysis.
  • Additional analytical enquiries: Clients can contact the laboratory to discuss other sample types, testing requirements and available methods before sending material for examination.

Laboratory findings should be considered alongside the sampling methodology, sample location and other relevant site information. Where an investigation requires quantitative airborne results, the applicable measurement procedures, reporting requirements and accreditation status must also be considered.

Mould Lab Supporting Environmental and Building Investigations

Supporting Environmental and Building Investigations

Mould laboratory analysis can contribute to investigations involving dampness, water-damaged building materials, suspected fungal growth and indoor environmental conditions. Findings may be assessed alongside building inspections, moisture measurements, sampling locations, ventilation conditions and other relevant evidence to develop a more informed understanding of the environment being investigated.

SESALAB supports occupational hygienists, environmental consultants, building inspectors, mould professionals, remediation contractors and organisations responsible for residential, commercial, industrial and institutional premises. Laboratory results provide information about the submitted samples; they do not independently establish the full extent, source or cause of fungal contamination within a building.

Where an investigation requires a site inspection, assessment of building conditions or collection of environmental samples, SESA also provides separate mould inspection, testing and assessment services. Laboratory analysis and site assessment can provide complementary information when selected according to the objectives of the investigation.

Submitting Samples to SESALAB

Correct sample selection, identification, documentation and packaging are important to ensure submitted material can be assessed using an appropriate analytical method. Clients should confirm sample acceptance and testing requirements with SESALAB before dispatch, particularly where a project has specific accreditation, reporting or turnaround requirements.

When preparing a submission:

  • Confirm the analytical requirements. Discuss the purpose of the investigation, sample type and requested method with the laboratory where necessary.
  • Identify and package samples correctly. Label each sample clearly and package it securely in accordance with the relevant submission instructions.
  • Complete the Chain of Custody documentation. Include the required sample identifiers and submission information.
  • Follow the laboratory’s delivery instructions. Confirm the submission procedure and delivery arrangements before sending samples.
  • Discuss reporting requirements and deadlines. Confirm expected turnaround and any specific reporting needs before submission.

SESALAB can provide guidance on sample acceptance, documentation and available analytical services. Visit Submit a Sample for submission information, or contact SESA to discuss your requirements.
